What We Believe
God is the creator of all things. He is the ruler of all things. He has forever existed in three co-equal personalities: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He is sovereign, perfect, righteous and omniscient. He is actively and personally involved in human life.
(Genesis 1:1,26,27; 3:22; Psalm 90:2; Isaiah 40:18-31; Matthew 28:19; John 4:24; 17:1-26; I Peter 1:2; II Corinthians 13:14; Ephesians 3:14-19; 4:24)
About Jesus Christ
He is God. He is co-equal with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Jesus personally ushered in his new kingdom with his life on earth. He lived a sinless and perfect life to be the perfect sacrifice for all of man’s sin. Because of his death and glorious resurrection, man can be reconciled to the Father through faith in Him. He ascended into heaven and will return to rule and reign as the King of Kings.
(Isaiah 7:14; 9:6; 53:5-6; Matthew 1:22-23; Luke 1:26-38; 24:5-8 &36-43; John 1:1-5; 14:10-30; Hebrews 1:1-13; 4:14-15; I Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 1:3-4; Acts 1:9-11; Philippians 2:5-8; I Timothy 6:14-15; I John 2:1; Titus 2:13)
About the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is God. The Holy Spirit is co-equal with the Father and the Son. He is the world to make men aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He indwells believers from the moment of conversion. He provides understanding in the lives of those who follow Christ. He is the helper, comforter, and teacher.
(Matthew 28:19; John 3:5; 16:7-13; 14:16-17; Romans 8:14-16; Acts 1:8; I Corinthians 2:12; 3:16; II Corinthians 3:17; Ephesians 1:13; Galatians 5:25; Ephesians 5:18; I peter 1:2)
About the Bible
The Bible is the literal word of God. The heart of God can be known through His word. It is written by the hands of men under the divine guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is infallible. It is authoritative. It is truth in every sense of the word.
(Amos 3:7; Zechariah 7:12; Psalm 119:105,160; 12:6; Proverbs 30:5; Romans 1:2-3; II Timothy 3:16; Hebrews 4:12; II Peter 1:20-21; II Timothy 1:13)
Man is created by God. We were created in His image for the purpose of being like him. We are however born inherently sinful and separated from God. Christ is our only hope.
(Genesis 1:27; 3:1-24; 5:3; Psalm 8:3-6; Isaiah 53:6; 59:1-2; Romans 3:23; Ephesians 2:3)
Salvation is simply us being made right with God. Man can do nothing to make himself right with God except trusting in Jesus Christ and the offer of forgiveness he makes to us. Because of this salvation we are given, we can be saved now from a life of death, pointlessness, and eternal separation to a life renewed with purpose and a relationship with the living God now and forever. Once received, this salvation can never be lost.
(Romans 5:1-2; 6:23; 8:14; 10:10; Ephesians 2:8-9; John 14:6; 1:12; II Corinthians 5:17; Titus 3:5; Galatians 3:26)
Essentials of Our Faith
All scripture is self attesting and being truth, requires our unreserved submission in all areas of life. The infallible Word of God (all sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments) is a complete and unified witness to God’s redemptive acts culminating in the incarnation of the living word, our Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible, uniquely and fully inspired by the Holy Spirit, is the supreme and final authority on all matters on which it speaks.
On this sure foundation we affirm these additional Essentials of our faith:
1. We believe in one God, the sovereign Creator and sustainer of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. To Him be all honor, glory and praise forever!
2.Jesus Christ, the living word, became flesh through His miraculous conception by the Holy Spirit and His virgin birth. He who is true God became true man united in one person forever. He died on the cross a sacrifice for our sins according to the scriptures. On the third day He arose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven and now sits at the right hand of the Majesty on high as our High Priest and Mediator.
3.The Holy Spirit has come to glorify Christ and to apply the saving work of Christ to our hearts. He convicts us of sin and draws us to the Savior. Dwelling in our hearts, he gives us new life, empowers us, and imparts gifts to us for service. He instructs and guides us into all truth and seals us for the day of redemption.
4.Being estranged from God and condemned by our sinfulness, our salvation is wholly dependent upon the work of God’s free grace. God credits his righteousness to those who put their faith in Christ alone for their salvation, thereby justifies them in His sight. Only such as are born of the Holy Spirit and receive Jesus Christ become children of God and heirs of eternal life.
5.The true church is composed of all persons who through saving faith in Jesus Christ and the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit are united together in the body of Christ. The church finds her visible, yet imperfect, expression in local congregations where the word of God is preached in its purity and the sacraments are administered in their integrity; where scriptural discipline is practiced, and loving fellowship is maintained. For her perfecting, she awaits the return of the Lord.
6.Jesus Christ will come again to the earth – personally, visibly, and bodily – to judge the living and the dead and to consummate history and the eternal plan of God. “Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” (Rev. 22:20)
7.The Lord Jesus Christ commands all believers to proclaim the gospel throughout the world and to make disciples of all nations. Obedience to the Great Commission requires total commitment to “HIm who loved us and gave Himself for us.” He calls us to a life of self denying love and service. “For we are His Workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” (Eph. 2:10)
In addition to the “Essentials of the Faith,” we believe the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Westminster Larger and Shorter Catechisms. For more information regarding these beliefs, go to www.epc.org.
